Identities and type systems for small presses and shops.

I'm Maren Holloway, an independent designer in Brooklyn. Since 2018 I've drawn mastheads, imprint identities and packaging for magazines, literary presses and food shops, one or two projects at a time, six to twelve weeks each.

Eight years in-house, eight on my own.

Before I went independent in 2018, I was a junior designer at Marrow & Bone, then the in-house designer at Heron Press, setting a 96-page issue four times a year.

Now I take on about six projects a year: two or three identities, a few editorial systems, and three advisory clients on retainer. Each project ends with the type spec, the master files and the printer's notes, so whoever comes after me can keep going.

What a client said

“Maren rebuilt our magazine's type system across nine spreads in three weeks. The handoff document was the first time I'd inherited a system I didn't have to reverse-engineer.”
